Sunbelt Ag Expo taps SPE to celebrate the heritage of American farming

The annual Sunbelt Ag Expo in Moultrie, Georgia is known as “North America’s Premier Farm Show.” In this series of documentary TV spots, Self-Proclaimed Entertainment explains why.

By capturing the events and atmosphere of the 2011 Expo, Wayne Franklin and Kris Wheeler of SPE brought their signature documentary style to this campaign. Their goal was to highlight the tradition and heritage of American family farms. Stitching the campaign together is a narrative by an actual farming family who shared with SPE not only their experiences with the Expo but their feelings about farming in general.

We are proud to announce the release of the first album from SPE, Duke Bardwell’s You & I. The album, recorded live at Birmingham’s WorkPlay Theater, is the de facto soundtrack for our upcoming documentary about Duke and his relationship with Elvis Presley, Duke & The King.

You can read more about the album here.

Listen to some samples of the album (or download a copy) on iTunes.

Our Kickstarter campaign for Duke & The King rolls on, though we’ve found ourselves in the doldrums that often happen at the midway point of a larger campaign like this. As is typical in most successful Kickstarter campaigns, we’ve been “plussing” our rewards as we go.

One of the new rewards we’re now offering is called, in keeping with the Royal theming of the others, “Royalty-Free.” That play on words is deliberate, because the reward offers the services of SPE for a ridiculously discounted rate. Read more

Southern Living Gives a Little Love to Duke & The King

Erin Shaw Street, a talented writer and editor at Southern Living, happens to be a huge Elvis fan. We like her. Turns out she likes us back. Here’s what she posted over on Southern Living’s site this afternoon:

As one of Southern Living‘s resident Elvis fanatics, it’s a project that has fascinated me. I hadn’t heard the story of Duke, and am eager to hear more, especially through the lens of Southern filmmakers.

Equally important is the mission of preserving the history of our Southern storytellers — musicians, artists, writers. We love hearing about these projects — share them with us!

We’re Kickstarter-Approved!

After reading a number of horror stories about filmmakers having their projects either rejected outright or subjected to a lengthy series of changes to get approval, we weren’t convinced our Kickstarter campaign was a sure thing. Good news! After less than 24 hours, our campaign to raise completion funds for Duke & The King was approved!

“But what’s Kickstarter?” you may ask. Good question. Read more

Duke & The King

For the past six weeks, Kris and I have been hard at work preparing our next music documentary, Duke & The King. Like our previous film, Back From the Dread, Duke & The King started life as a part of our long-gestating project, Bayou Country. Here’s a little background on how that happened:
